Of Books and Covers

The expression “Don’t judge a book by its cover” isn’t really about books, of course. It’s about people, and how, in our eagerness to make assessments, we sometimes base too much of our opinions on superficial trappings. Is a person attractive or unattractive? Well- or badly-dressed? Well-spoken or inarticulate? Are they of the “right” race or socioeconomic group? In our heads, we may know these aren’t the criteria for whether someone is a good or worthy person, but in our hearts — we judge. Brenda S. (with a little help from Mr. Rogers and others) discusses how, and why, to look a little deeper before we make our judgments.
